make a few posts with some extra photos. :)

Baby is here!

The long wait is finally over! We now have a beautiful little girl. She was born September 15 at 8:16 pm, was 20 and 3/4 inches long, and weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces. We named her Krystal Sadie Marie. I went to the hospital at 4 am but wasn't dilated enough to be admitted. I walked around the hospital for two hours and went back to the Labor & Delivery triage as instructed by the doctor there. At 6 am I was at 6 cm, and the doctor admitted me. The contractions I had been having since 12:30 am had significantly intensified while I was walking around the hospital. Every contraction was excruciating by this point, and I couldn't sit still or stand still during them. By 7 am I was situated in a room with monitors on me. The only way I could deal with the contractions was to sit on a ball and rock back and forth, but I kept knocking the monitors off. The nurse told me I would need to sit in the bed because they couldn't keep the monitors on me while I was sitting on the ball. Even after I got into the bed, I still kept knocking the monitors off during the contractions. Around 8:30 am I received an epidural that kicked in within a few minutes and took the edge off. Unfortunately it also seemed to slow the labor progress to a crawl and by late afternoon I was no closer to delivering a baby than I was that morning. At 4 pm, the midwife who had been there all day came in to say good-bye before she left for the day. She wished me well and hoped that I would deliver soon. Two hours later, the doctor came in and told me that they wanted to make a c-section delivery available to me if I wanted it. My birth plan had covered a situation like this where if I wasn't progressing, I wanted a c-section to be an option. Still, making that decision was pretty nerve wracking. I wasn't quite ready yet, and the doctor assured me that she would make sure the oncoming shift knew and would be prepared to perform a c-section if I chose to do so later. She assured me that I was in no danger right then and neither was my baby, and I could choose to continue labor without any risks at that point. I chose to continue labor for another 30 minutes. The nurse turned up the pitocin, and we tried to get some productive contractions. It still didn't work. At that point, I realized that I may not be able to easily deliver this way and decided I was ready to go for a c-section. My sister encouraged me to not be afraid of it and told me I was going to be just fine. After she told the doctor that I was ready for a c-section, I told her that I realized that if I kept laboring at that point, I may have to go through everything she went through when she had her oldest son, Noah. I didn't want to go through all of that, and she didn't wish for me to go through it either. She agreed that was a good possibility and stayed with me for the c-section, camera ready to take pictures of the baby right away. The doctor came in to talk to me about the c-section and brought paperwork for me to sign. After that, it was a flurry of activity. Multiple nurses and doctors came to my bed to introduce themselves and tell me what job they would be doing for this delivery. In short order I was wheeled into "Delivery 1" and prepped for surgery. Once I was prepped, my sister was allowed in with her camera. She stayed by me and told me I was doing great. She knew how nervous I was at that point. Before long, I heard the doctor announce that we had a girl and the time. Then I heard her crying. I cried too. It seemed an eternity before they brought her to me to see her. The held her down near me, and I said hello and called her name. She turned her head, looked at me, and smiled. The nurse held her down next to me, and I was able to kiss her cheek before she was whisked away to be cleaned up completely. She was beautiful and perfect. I couldn't believe she was really mine. I sent my sister with her to take pictures. The doctor put me back together and stitched me shut. Then I was taken to Recovery. After an hour there, my little girl was brought to me. The nurse handed her to me and told me I could hold her while they wheeled me to my room in the Mom & Baby ward. I didn't want to put her down. The staff at my hospital took wonderful care of me. My nurse the first night was amazing. She explained everything she was doing to me and did her best to make me as comfortable as she could. I only wished my sweetheart was there with me. Unfortunately he had an unexpected work trip come up and broke down before he could make it back to me. I'm grateful my brother and his fiancee came to be with me until my sister could get there. My mom even drove in from out of state to bring me home from the hospital and stayed for the week to help me. I don't know how I would have gotten through it all without my family. Fortunately my sweetheart came home shortly after I did, and my mom was able to enjoy herself as Granny. :)

Finally ready!

Well, we are finally ready for Baby! These photos show the room from the door looking in. The only thing we want to do is get an area rug for the center of the floor. We have seen one that we like, but we will get it once we have the extra money to spend on it. I eventually want to put some valances up over the blinds and maybe put some of my many pieces of artwork from around the world on the walls. The goal was to get the nursery ready for Baby to come home, and we have succeeded!

This is the closet door with a little organizer full of small baby items all ready for when Baby arrives. The fan may go away later. You can see it on the very edge of the picture. The closet is full of Baby's things.

This is from the corner by the window with the radiator under it. Thanks to Loralee, Baby has a box of clothes sitting on top of the dresser. We ran out of room in the closet to stack things!

The bassinet is all ready. It won't stay in this room once Baby comes home. We just don't need it in our room yet.

A nice cozy bed for my favorite sister to sleep in when she comes to visit. I already had the sheets and comforter from when I was on a ship. I wasn't there too awfully long and everything was still in like new condition, so I decided that this would be a good place to put them. The sheets are cozy and the comforter is nice and warm for a chilly night. :)

Baby's bag is packed and ready to go! It even has a special outfit from Aunt Cynetta for coming home and pictures. I'm sure Baby is going to adore Aunt Cynetta. :)

More nursery updates!

Today has been a bit of a rainy day due to Hurricane Irene blowing through here. Baby's room has moved along quite nicely though. My friend threw me a nice baby shower a couple weeks back, and I got quite a few nice things for Baby.

We finally got the dresser together, and I started putting things away.

The last major thing to do in there was to freshen up the paint on the baby's crib. In the pictures it doesn't really look any different than it did before, but close up, you can see that it is much brighter now. I'm quite pleased with how well it turned out.

Butter Roasted Chicken

So this Butter Roasted chicken turned out wonderfully! I got the original recipe from Allrecipes. Then I modified it to suit what I had available. Here's my recipe:

1 3-4 pound whole chicken
1/2 c. butter
1/3 c. fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 1/2 tsp. smoked Spanish paprika
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. dried, crushed rosemary
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Put chicken in ungreased glass baking dish. (I used 9x13x2, but whatever suits your needs will probably work fine.) Mix remaining ingredients in small saucepan and bring to boil. (I used medium heat.) Remove from heat and pour over chicken and inside cavity. (I brushed it out with a silicone basting brush just to get a good coating.) Put in oven and bake for about 1 1/2 hours until juices run clear. Baste occasionally. (I basted every 30 minutes.)

The white spot on the chicken is where I couldn't resist and pulled a small piece of skin to taste it!

Vinegar!

So I'm really falling in love with vinegar lately! I made a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water and used it to clean the baby's crib with. The crib looked so much brighter afterwards. Even better is that I'm not worried about any residue that could harm the baby. My next idea was to try it on the shower curtain that had a soap scum build-up. After a couple of days, I noticed a serious decrease in soap scum and best of all--NO SCRUBBING! I'll keep finding more uses for the awesome power of vinegar. :)

Baby Nursery News

Baby will be here in September, and I'm soooo excited! I've been hard at work on the nursery. I've got a few pics to share. These are some of my before pics. I don't have any with the carpet all the way down.

I don't have any great pictures yet of the whole room now that the carpet has been completely pulled out and the furniture rearranged. The pictures below show the baby furniture in the room now. The carpet is completely gone! Yaaaayyy!!!

The dresser. This is the actual spot it will go in. It's all neatly packed in the box.

The crib. Just needs some touch-ups to the paint to look like new. :)

The changing table got put together today. It came in a box just like the dresser.

Well, I'm really happy with how it's all coming together. This week I hope to get the dresser together. I just need to start setting up the changing table now. I need to get a mattress pad to make the bed more comfy and then I can make up the bed. All of the stuff in the baby's room right now is stuff that belongs in there, so I'm really happy with that. More pictures will be posted as it all comes together.

So I really am horrible at keeping this updated. Baby is growing nicely though! Here's a couple of pics from the 20 week ultrasound at the end of April. This was such a fun appointment for us, and these are my favorite pics. I love the little foot picture. The second foot is somewhat visible in this picture too.

This picture is my absolute favorite profile pic! Look above the head. See the little toes? We watched as Baby went from sitting cross-legged to stretching those little legs out, catching the knees with the little hands, and pulling the toes up to the face!

New Updates At Last!

Wow! So much has happened since I made my last post. Life has gone a little crazy lately. For the last 5 years I have had a wonderful man in my life. We were discussing when exactly this year we were going to get married (March or June?) when we discovered that a little baby would be making an appearance this year. :) Baby is due September 16 and is at 9 weeks in this ultrasound. Little hands, feet, head and body are easily seen! The midwife assured me that Baby has a good heartbeat and appears to be quite healthy. Who could deny that this is a little life? I think all mommies should see their babies this early. It is really quite amazing to see!

Ok, I'm back on this kick again! My sink is clean and shiny once again. I love Bon Ami powder. It never scratches and gets up all the gunk. FlyLady to the rescue again. Tomorrow I'll take a picture of it and post it. I'm too tired tonight. :)

Wow! It has certainly been quite a year for me. I have no new pictures to post right now, but I have been so busy lately I haven't had time to post anything here. I have a couple of projects in progress. I started working on a blanket. The blanket is moving along quite nicely now that I have figured out the pattern. That was a bit difficult at first! I had to start over 4 times before I finally got it right! Then I decided for a side project to make a wash cloth. It didn't seem like it was that difficult, but for some reason I can't seem to follow the pattern! Every few rows I end up with more or less stitches than I'm supposed to have. I will end up with the pattern being off to where the last few stitches that should be knitted or purled aren't the right number, but yet I have the right number on the needle! I went back to working on the blanket after about the 4th time of that happening. I got tired of ripping out stitches. I don't know if I'll finish it or do something else with it. To make matters worse, it's not even that difficult a pattern!

Since this is probably my last post for the year due to how busy I am, have a Merry Christmas everyone and be safe!

What to do with cherries........

You eat 'em of course! Seriously, I found this recipe online and just had to try it out. Well, Russ very often becomes my tester. Any time I am up to see him I like to experiment with a new (sometimes old) recipe. I will have to dig up that recipe for lemon bars. Even Uncle Emery liked them! Grandma told me that Emery didn't like lemon desserts, but he decided to try a piece and thought it was pretty tasty! Russ loved them too. In that case, it was a recipe my mom had made for years! This time I thought I would try a recipe that I found about a year ago. My mom had picked a couple baskets of cherries off the tree in Russ's yard, and I decided to make a cherry clafouti out of them.

Well the funny thing about cherries is that before you can use them, you have to pit them. Since Russ didn't have a working cherry pitter, here's how we had to do them:

We made a mess of ourselves and had a blast! Somehow I managed to get cherry juice up my nose! Note to self: wear an old shirt when doing this. I had spots all over my tank top. Fortunately they all came out.

We had a nice bowlful of cherries afterward even if Russ did eat a few while pitting. :)

Too bad I don't have a photo of the finished result, but Russ and I really enjoyed this dessert. It was super simple to make. All you need is a pan and a blender!

It's looking like Sundays are my blog days since I don't have time to do much through the week. Well, the other day I went to Food Lion to grab a few items. It's only a mile from my house and has the best prices out of the nearby grocery stores, so I shop there frequently. Remember when I posted about method products? The only store that carried them then was Target. Now Target carries a wide variety of their products--laundry soap, fabric softeners, and air fresheners in addition to a whole line of household cleaners. It seems that as Target has expanded their selection, Food Lion has started carrying some of the products. This is really great for me since I shop Food Lion more often than Target on account of distance. (Target is 10 -15 minutes from my house while Food Lion is only 2 minutes from my house.) The Food Lion by my house only carries the Lavender cleaner right now, but another Food Lion 10 minutes away carries the dish soap. I think it's only a matter of time before they all carry a little of everything. :)

Ok, I admit it: I joined the ranks of juicers. I have been looking at getting a juicer for quite a while now. I had bought a book a while back called 100 Health Boosting Drinks. It has a lot of great recipes in it. Not all of them require a juicer either. Well, it kind of got shelved for a while, but yesterday I decided I was going to go buy a juicer. Off I went to Kohl's because I knew they had a nice one for around $100. It was actually $130 and not in stock, so I went to Macy's. (The Macy's here used to be Hecht's and still carries all the stuff that Hecht's used to have for about the same prices as Hecht's.) It was my lucky day because Macy's was having a sale! (Maybe a Leap Year sale? hmmm....) Anyway, the exact same juicer was $100 at Macy's. Yea for me!!!! I had to buy it now if I was going to get it.

The nice thing about the juicer is that all the components that touch your juice are dishwasher safe. That makes for super easy cleanup. I put all those components in the dishwasher last night so it could be used in the morning. I had some oranges that were not going to last much longer as well as some carrots. Some of the recipes in this book are pretty basic ideas of how to combine fruits and vegetables for great taste. The premise of the book is that certain foods when combined with other specific foods will boost your health. For example, if you combine carrots with oranges it will boost your energy, but when combined with endive and celery is good for your eyesight. Now, I don't know if I buy into the "combine specific foods to lose weight, boost health" or any of that stuff theory, but what I do know is that more fruits and vegetables in your diet is good for you. It has been proven that certain fruits or vegetables or herbs do help aid in digestion or boost immunity. For instance, peppermint and catnip have been proven to help soothe an upset stomach. I am all about finding ways to improve my health, and sometimes I just can't eat 8 servings of vegetables in a day, but I can drink part of them. I do know that more vegetables in my diet will make me feel better and help me lose weight and then keep it off. Even more importantly I will waste less money and food with a juicer. I couldn't possibly eat that whole bag of oranges or use that whole bag of carrots before it went bad. I am after all only one person, but this morning I was able to use TWO of those oranges and ONE of those carrots. I could easily do the same thing tomorrow or later in the day if I want a sweet snack. Enough of my soap box now. If you want the book, you can find it in any bookstore or on www.amazon.com. I actually bought mine at Barnes & Noble one day. It offers recipes for juices, smoothies, coolers, and soups. (I am seriously thinking about going to the store and getting some sweet potatoes to try that one.)

Gingerbread Muffins

Ok, well, my sink isn't clean right now, but that's only because I haven't finished cleaning everything up from these scrumptious gingerbread muffins! (Don't worry, I will clean it up. The dishwasher was just full right now.) Anyway, I found this really neat Bed & Breakfast recipe site. http://www.bbonline.com/recipe/index.html These muffins taste just like gingerbread. I cut the recipe in half because I didn't want that many muffins.

Gingerbread Muffins
(compliments of Bed & Breakfast of Summerville located in Summerville, SC)

1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup raisins

In a mixing bowl, cream the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Dissolve the soda in a cup with the buttermilk. In a separate bowl, combine the flour with the spices and add the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Stir in the pecans and raisins. Store the batter in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, fill greased muffin cups 2/3 full. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until done. For unchilled batter, reduce cooking time to 15 mins. Batter may be stored for several weeks in the refrigerator. Makes about 6 dozen muffins.

NOTES: I didn't have the pecans or the raisins, and I substituted margarine for shortening. I am not quite sure if the amount of batter I have will make 3 dozen muffins. I don't really think so. I think I'll be lucky if I get 2 dozen out of it. I haven't finished baking them out. I thought I would save the batter for later. The other thing about these instructions is that the recipe calls for molasses, but doesn't exactly tell you where to put it in, so I just put it in at the end. These are really yummy when warm.

Ok, I have found this really wonderful website. I will tell you all now, that I definitely have CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)! I have not always suffered from this problem (or maybe I have and the times it wasn't afflicting me were just relapses of normal life). At any rate, I am tired of CHAOS and must find the cure, so here is a really neat website that talks about how to conquer this. From this website you can find another website set up by sisters who are convinced that disorganization is genetic. (Sound familiar, Cynetta? How many times have we had that conversation? LOL) I'm loving this site, and I am off to clean my sink!

Ok, so I'm a little behind on blogging. Here are a few pictures of some mittens that I made for Noah for Christmas. Cynetta said she likes them and that Noah has worn them a little bit. She only puts them on him for church or other outings where he won't be playing outside in the snow.

I made them on two regular size 8 needles from Red Heart Soft yarn. The pattern can be found here. It's actually quite a simple pattern and doesn't take much time to knit up!

Honey Mustard?

Ok, well, I'm kinda into trying to save money, so I bought a whole, cut-up chicken the other day. It was pretty cheap. I don't remember the price per pound, but I know I spent somewhere around $4 on the whole thing. I wanted something easy to do with it, so I pulled out my Betty Crocker Healthy Choices cookbook. I found this great recipe for honey dijon chicken, but I had a bit of a problem. My dijon mustard that had been in my pantry had a broken tamper seal, so it found it's way into the trash! I really didn't want to go to the grocery store even though it's only a mile away, so I improvised. I grabbed the unopened bottle of yellow mustard (notice a trend here?) and dumped it into a bowl and then added white wine, brown sugar, turmeric, and ginger and stirred it all up. Then I realized I was forgetting a key ingredient--the honey! lol I couldn't tell you the quantities, but I mixed it to taste. I was trying to overcome the yellow mustard taste. It turned out pretty well.

New Recipe!

Ok, so I tried this new recipe for Banana Bread, and I loved it!

Here it is:

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unpacked brown sugar
1/2 tsp table salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
3 tsp canola oil
1 large egg(s), beaten
2 medium egg white(s), beaten
3 large banana(s), ripe
1 cup uncooked old fashioned oats

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, stir together dry ingredients. Add oil and eggs; mix thoroughly.
In a smaller bowl, mash bananas with a potato masher or fork. Add bananas and oatmeal to batter.
Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray. Pour batter into pan and bake until top of loaf is firm to touch, 45 to 55 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes. Flip out and cool on a wire rack for another 10 minutes.

Ok, so I am currently in love with method products. The nice thing is that they can bought at Target. I decided to buy the grapefruit cleaner for my kitchen. It smells almost exactly like grapefruits! It does a great job on cleaning up too. It works on glass cook tops, but a glass or ceramic cook top cleaner shines better.

I also decided to get the stainless steel cleaner, and it seems to work pretty well. It cleans up quite nicely and works just as well as the more expensive Kitchenaid brand. Next up is gonna be some great candles...........

Pot Luck Pasta Salad

Alright, here's a recipe that I think everyone will like. I made it for a station BBQ, and it was such a big hit that I only had a little bit leftover when I went home. My scheduling officer said she loved it because it gave her an idea of what to do with all her yellow squash that she had in her garden! This is one healthy recipe that tastes wonderful.

Ingredients:

4 oz uncooked whole-wheat pasta, corkscrew shape (about 1 1/2 cups)
1/3 cup olive oil
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 tsp dried oregano
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp table salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 medium garlic clove(s), minced
2 1/2 oz olive(s), canned, sliced, black (about 10 medium black olives)
1 medium green pepper(s), chopped (about 1 cup)
1 medium sweet red pepper(s), chopped (about 1 cup)
3/4 cup grape tomatoes, or other small tomatoes, halved (about 10 tomatoes)
1 medium yellow summer squash, halved lengthwise and sliced (about 1/2 cup)
1 medium zucchini, halved lengthwise and sliced (about 1/2 cup)
1 cup frozen green peas, thawed

Instructions:

Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Rinse pasta with cold water; drain again and set aside.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, prepare salad dressing by mixing together oil, lemon juice, oregano, mustard, salt, black pepper and garlic; set aside until ready to use.
In a large bowl, combine cooked pasta with vegetables; pour in dressing and toss thoroughly to coat. Cover and chill about 2 hours. Yields about 1 cup per serving.

Ok, I said I would post stuff about products that I've tried, so here's the first one.

A couple weeks ago I got this stuff at the store that I absolutely love (except for the scent)! While I don't hate the scent, it's not really my kind of scent. I didn't know what ylang ylang scent was in the first place. Anyway, I got this shower spray and this all purpose cleaner to try out. The shower spray works great! I haven't had to scrub my shower in two or three weeks but it is still clean! The bottles are decorative enough to leave out in the bathroom too. The all purpose cleaner has a wonderful lavender scent to it, so my bathroom now smells like lavender after I've cleaned it.

The cleaners are relatively inexpensive. I paid about $2.50 each for them. They are also environmentally friendly and have no harsh chemicals. Sounds great to me! The best part--they work really well.

Since Cynetta has been after me for a while about this, here's My Little Corner so that all my friends can find me. I'll add pictures as I can and eventually I'll share the recent renovations my ugly bathroom and worn-out kitchen saw.

You'll find little updates about me, but not a lot of stuff unless it's really important. I go to work, clean or fix up my house, and run rescue. Oh yeah, I eat, sleep, and drink somewhere in there too. :)

I'll add some of my favorite recipes or great workouts I've discovered in my quest to lose a bit of weight and then maintain it.

I'll also post some of the products (home, health care, beauty, etc.) that I've tried and tell you how I liked them.
